D. The miracle of life.

So, I was studying a fair bit of embryology a month back (because it’s kinda interesting and, I also need to pass exams, duh). And, as I was flipping through pages (actually it was an e-book lol) of Langman’s Medical Embryology, I came across something very interesting.

Something that I had never thought about.

The miracle of life.

The thing is, the fact that you are reading this right now means that you are a very, very lucky person.

The fact that you were born (with all of your limbs attached to your body) is nothing short of a miracle.

Yet, we all take life for granted. Since everyone around us is alive, people don’t realize how amazing is it to be born! Yes, there are 7 billion people but, each one of us is lucky.

Don’t believe me?

The simple fact that you are born, makes you a lucky, lucky motherfucker.

Let me explain why: medical-style lol.

So, the point is, a LOT of things could have gone wrong during pregnancy that could have severely reduced your chances of being born (and being born as a healthy child). And by a LOT, I really mean a lot!

So, let us run the actual numbers.

So, this picture shows that 50 percent of pregnancies result in spontaneous (automatically) abortions. Hence, there was a 50 percent chance of abortion when you were inside your mom’s tummy!

And that too, there is a 25 percent chance of embryos having a major chromosomal defect. So, first, the chances of you being born are slim in the first place (50 percent lol) and that too, there is a 25 percent chance that you would be born as an ‘abnormal’ baby! The odds were against you even before you were born lol.

Now let’s say you had an embryological defect (25 percent chances), and you still managed to be born (which is rare 2 to 3 percent chances). How would life be like?

You could have easily been one of these people. (Btw I have the utmost respect for the family of the patients who allowed the pictures of their loved ones to be used for the advancement of medical knowledge).

And a whole lot of other common disorders.

Imagine being one of these people and how difficult life is for them. Lucky you were born “normal”, heck lucky that you were born in the first place!

But wait, there is more. We haven’t even talked about infertility.

15 to 30 percent of couples have infertility issues! That’s scary as fuck dude. So, the fact that your mom got pregnant is also lucky. Your parents could have easily been one of those unfortunate couples who can’t have children despite wanting to. I personally know people who have had this problem, and trust me it’s very hard for the family.

Furthermore, even after the embryo is successfully implanted in the uterus, there are still a LOT of things that can go wrong; you will be there for 9 months after all. 15 percent of your mother’s oocytes are not even fertilized, 15 percent of them are fertilized but fail to implant, and there is only a 58 percent chance that you would survive after 2 weeks of pregnancy.

Hence, there is only about 42 percent chance of you surviving pregnancy and even if you were lucky enough to do that, there is still a high chance of abortion in subsequent months or you being born abnormal.

Think about that for a minute.

Now, isnt it a miracle that you were lucky enough to make through all those difficulties and be born as a healthy child? The chances were not that great for you lol. But still, you were born as a healthy child!

That’s crazy. That’s why you are a lucky motherfucker.

But look around us, no one thinks about life this way. We all take life for granted. We curse ourselves for being unlucky (for not being smart enough, for not being rich enough, etc) but motherfuckers are lucky the moment they were born! And yet they don’t realize that.

Life has become all too cheap these days, and it’s honestly sad.

Every day hundreds of people kill themselves. That’s crazy when you think about it from a biological perspective! Imagine everything that had to go right for these people to be born (it’s nothing short of a biological miracle) and now, these people are just throwing life away as if they got it for free? That’s rough bruh.

So, yeah.

Always remember that you were lucky from the moment you were born, and… love yourself.

Cheers!
