Pulp Fiction.

Pulp Fiction is one of the most iconic movies of the 90s. Today, it’s regarded as a classic. It has had an immense influence on pop culture over the decades (a feat which only a few movies like The Matrix have achieved). Hence, it’s one of the greatest movies of all time.
It is a movie written and directed by none other than, the great and electrifying Quintin Tarantino. It’s a movie about crime and drama. It was made in 1994. It stars Jhon Travolta, Samuel L Jackson (the F bomb guy we all love), Uma Thurman (my new favorite heroine from Kill Bill), Bruce Willis and Tarantino himself. He even plays part in his own movie! How cool is that lol.
It’s Tarantino’s 2nd movie.
The plot
So, one of the reasons why this movie is so iconic in history is because of its weird plot which everyone absolutely loved! The movie follows 3 distinct stories, but the fun part is all these stories are connected to each other. This weird interconnection between plots within plot made this film, in a sense ‘revolutionary’.
As with all Tarantino movies; the story is told in different chapters. There are 7 chapters in this movie. And… there is an ample amount of drugs and violence to satisfy your needs ; )
It follows an old-school, over the top storyline (which I’ve grown to love).
So, the movie follows the everyday life of two thugs, Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield (played by Travolta and Jackson respectively) who work for their boss Wallace. As well as the boxer Butch Coolidge (played by Bruce Willis).
The first story follows the interactions between Vincent and Mia Wallace (played by Uma Thurman), who is Vincent’s boss’s wife. His boss had asked Vincent to ‘take care’ of his wife while he was away for work. Hence, Mia and Vincent have a ‘semi-date’ while Wallace is gone, and the date quickly takes a very unexpected turn.
The second story follows the dealings of Vincent and Jules with a bunch of teenagers who are ‘not returning’ their boss’s money. It follows an altercation which goes south very quickly lol.
And the last story is about the boxer Butch, who tries to double cross Wallace (the thug boss) by running away with his money. This story quickly gets weird as fuck. It’s quite honestly disturbing, but in a good way lol.
It’s a crazy fucking plot with lots of twists and turns.
Moreover, all these stories are related to each other. Hence, the audience is “delightfully confused” throughout the whole duration of the movie, and when it all makes sense at the end, it’s orgasmic.
The cinematography.
If I said I know a lot about cinematography then I would be lying, so I’ll tell what I know. The movie is pretty fast paced, you do not get bored at any time of the movie (except maybe at the beginning). The quick little frame cuts from scene to scene makes the movie seem fast and exciting. I liked it.
The direction.
This is where Tarantino shines.
The dialogues are punchy and over the top. The characters are made to look so out-of-the-world but are still reasonable. Seriously, the dialogues, especially the ones for Samuel L Jackson were so badass! I loved it.
The drama aspect of the movie is also on point. The characters’ personality shines in the movie. Each character has been given enough breathing space for the audience to connect with them, and each one of them is unique. For example; Vincent is clumsy and slow (almost bored with life lol) whereas Jules is a fast talker and exaggerative.
Also, the use of violence in the movie is on point. There is violence in the movie but it is not used unnecessarily. Whenever there is violence in the plot, it usually serves as a turning point in the movie. Hence, it is used as a tool to move the plot forward and make it more impactful, which I appreciated.
And lastly, the cast was also awesome. All actors did a fantastic job, especially Uma Thurman (as a spoiled rich lady) and Jhon Travolta (as a slow, clumsy thug) play their part to make the characters feel organic to audience.
Things I particularly liked.
The direction, and the way that the story progresses so quickly, with no time for audience to be bored, were the highlights for me regarding the movie.
Conclusion.
It’s by far my favorite Tarantino movie. If you want to watch a badass movie as well as learn some pop culture references, you can’t go wrong with PULP FICTION.
Rating: I freaking loved it!
