Dogs and homosexuals not allowed!

Sounds bad? Sounds like something only a horrible person would say? It does sound just a little bit homophobic doesn’t it?
Ah well don’t worry about it because… I agree with this statement.
(Shocked face, thunder sounds, the world is falling apart!)
Nah not really, I’m just kidding lol. Do you really think a young progressive person like me could have such hideous sentiments about our gay brothers and sisters? I mean, everyone has the right to live and express themselves, right?
Right?
“Nah man! We do like those faggots here” my friend said.
Did you know the word “faggot” is a derogatory slang used to harass gays, and using it is looked down upon (and not accepted) in most western societies? It’s considered as a horrible word infused with so much hate and homophobia that it’s equivalent of calling a black person the infamous n-word.
But fuck it.
That’s what my friend said and I can’t change that. What’s more? He is a friend I admire.
But that’s what I could hear, loud and clear, from his frequent Facebook posts. A message so bold and clear that that you could not mistaken it for anything else.
“GAYS HAVE NO PLACE IN ISLAM”
Yup, that was the conclusion of most of his post about homosexuality. And he posted this freely, without so much as a second thought, on his Facebook wall, for all of his friends to see. What’s more? There were likes and heart reacts on the post in a matter of minutes!
This was very strange for me.
Here is my friend, who is just a super cool person, who is intelligent and hardworking, whom I admire a lot. And then here is his Facebook post, a post carrying a message that I potentially do not approve of.
What do I do?
I was brought up in a relatively liberal society. A diverse society (with so many different races and cultures) where you were mostly free to do whatever you wanted; women had rights, they could have jobs (and could drive), you could marry whom you wanted (for the most part) and live life on your own terms. I have lived in cities for the most part of my life, hence superstitions and old beliefs were never a part of my DNA. Moreover, I have been listening to English songs and watching American movies since I was a kid. Hence, I was exposed of ‘western’ ideas and values from a young age.
And one of those ideas is “Homosexuality is normal, homophobia is not”.
Hence, I believe that gay people should have rights to love and marry in every society. To say that they have no place in society, based religion or any other reason for that matter, is a BAD THING!
It’s a bad thing.
So, is my friend a bad person?
Find out in the next episode of “let me explain series”!
Cheers!
